INTRODUCTION

The Fukuyama University Library was renovated in 1985, and then the library service has been computerized. The computerized system assists in information retrieval, the loaning and returning of books, ordering and accesssing of books, and other sources for student benefit.
The library services as a reference library as well as a research library. An effort has been made to collect local sources and special attention has been paid to collect internationally rare contributions. A central control system of sources and an information retrieval system have been adopted.

RANGE OF USERS

University facility members, staff and students, and those with pemission from the head of the library.

VOLUMES OF THE COLLECTIONS

Books: some 222,700 volumes (Japanese books....135,700 vols. ; Foreign language books...87,000 vols.)
Periodicals: (Japanese periodicals..2,001 titles; Foreign peiodicals...1,858 titles.)

RARE BOOKS

Manay rare books such as the four great classical economists' works from the 18th century, includng Adam Smith's works (The Wealth of Nations 1st‐11th Edition, etc.) are stored in the library.

MICROFILM READERS

Users are requested to ask a librarian at the counter with their teacher's approval, when they use a microfilm reader.

A.V.BOOTHS

Three cassette decks and four video decks are available. In principle, the booths are only for viewing appropriate library cassettes. However, user‐owned cassettes can be used.

PHOTOCOPY SERVICES

Photocopy services are available only for those books and periodicals stored in the library as far as the policy permits.

REFERENCE SERVICES

Information on books, documents, periodicals, etc. is available at the check‐out counter.

INTER‐LIBRARY SERVICES

If a record or documents that one wishes to consult is not available in the library, arrangements can be made, at the user's cost, to have it photocopied at other libraries (in Japan or abroad). Inter‐library loans may also be arranged. Further informaion will be given at the counter.

ON‐LINE INFORMAION RETRIEVAL SERVICES

The information retrieval services through internatonal telecommunicaion facilities are provided with some database, such as Dialog, JOIS, Nikkei Telecom Sogo‐ban, and MACSIS‐IR. These services are limited only to the faculty members, graduate students, and senior students of the university.
